She has had solo exhibitions at Mission Comics in San Francisco, City Limits in Oakland, Farewell Books in Austin, Nationale in Portland, and Huis Haas in Antwerp. Her sculpture and installation work has been exhibited. Impressions was painted over three months at the Maison Des Auteurs residency in rural France, where Koch spent. Set in an ambiguously modern time, the book captures a young woman’s reluctant journey into self-awareness. ![]() It tells the story of a young figure model and her relationships with her mother, her best friend, and the man drawing her. Koch is the author of three book-length comics– The Whale, The Blonde Woman, and Impressions. She has released several graphic novels including Xeric Award winner The Blonde Woman, and Impressions. Impressions is Aidan Koch’s third graphic novel. Along with works on paper, she makes sculptures, ceramics, and textiles, which often incorporate recurring motifs such as artifacts from classical and ancient cultures. When drawing her fragmentary narratives she asks, “what is the minimum information needed to move the story along?” None of her characters have names and she often whites out or removes elements to keep interpretation open-ended. Aidan Koch creates elliptical comics that challenge the reader to fill in the blanks of both image and storyline. Impressions is Aidan Koch’s third graphic novel. ![]()
